Is your video really transparent?

Most video players show transparent areas as black, so a good cutout can look broken. Open the file here to see it over a checkerboard or any colour, and to measure how much of it is actually see-through.

FAQ

Good to know.

Why does my transparent video play with a black background?+

Windows Media Player, Films & TV, VLC and QuickTime ignore the alpha channel in WebM. They show the colour data underneath, which is black where the video is transparent and slightly rough around the edges. The file is fine: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, OBS and web pages use the alpha and show the clean cutout.

How does the check work?+

Your browser decodes a few frames and counts pixels that are fully or partly see-through. A file with real transparency shows a clear share of transparent pixels; a file with the background baked in shows none. Nothing leaves your device.

It says no transparency, but I exported with alpha. Why?+

Either the export dropped the alpha channel—common with MP4, which cannot carry it—or this browser cannot read it. Safari and iPhone show WebM alpha as black, so check in Chrome, Edge or Firefox. See why transparent videos turn black.

My MOV will not open here.+

Browsers cannot play ProRes, so a ProRes 4444 MOV cannot be previewed. Convert it with the free ProRes to WebM converter and check the result.

How do I get a transparent video in the first place?+

Upload a clip to the AI video background remover: you get a transparent WebM, and a ProRes 4444 copy for editing software if you need one.
